In some cases, you may not even be purchasing an actual device, just instructions on how to build one.

Be aware that some products currently on the market can result in a failed emissions test because their use may be considered by the EPA or state agencies to require illegal tampering with the smog-control system. Others can increase emissions or cause the “CHECK ENGINE” warning to appear.
