Camping Light Review: Top Light Sources for Family Camping Trips

Family camping trips are a whole lot of fun, but the nights are long and often pretty dark. No camper is fully prepared without some good flashlights and a good lantern. Here are some camping light reviews for the next time you shop around for camping light.

Family Camping Lanterns: Gas, Batteries, and Candle

All types of lanterns have their ups and their downs. Gas lanterns are the most effective with a very bright light, but they are hazardous. They should never be used in a tent or in a camper. Battery run lanterns are the safest, and can be used in tents and campers. The light is duller, though, and you will go through batteries quickly, especially if you’re an avid camper. Some battery lanterns are rechargeable, though. Candle lanterns are easy to use, but again, pose a fire hazard. The hot wax will burn skin, so keep it out of reach of children. The most versatile lanterns for family camping are battery ones. The hazards are minimal, they can be handled by children, and many lanterns have a remote option which is great when the family heads off to bed. Everyone can settle in and then with the push of a button, lights out!

Flashlights for Family Camping

Here’s a camping light review tip: When shopping for a new flashlight, keep in mind the kind of camping that you do. If you like to pack light, you’ll want a lighter, smaller flashlight. If you do a lot at night that requires your hands to be free, you’ll want a headlamp. If you camp in wet seasons, are involved in water activities, or just generally get your flashlight wet often, you’ll want a water proof one. If you break flashlights easily, or need something durable for the kids, you’ll want a heavier duty flashlight, like a Mag. There are also LED flashlights, which are bright and efficient. Crank flash lights may not last long, but a couple of minutes of cranking will provide plenty of renewable light, which is always handy if you run out of batteries.

No family camping equipment check list is complete without a few good light sources. While flashlights are great for moving around, you’ll need a good lantern as well. Take some time, look through the various types of lanterns and flashlights and purchase ones that would best suit your family camping needs.
