Cold Weather Tips For Dogs Chesapeake VA

Like people, there are two types of dogs; those that love the cold and those that can't even tolerate putting one toe into the snow. My dog is one of the latter, she thinks that heaven is a place with lots of ice and snow and a blustery cold wind blowing her fur around her neck. There are two types of people, those that love the cold and those that hate the cold. Having grow up in Maine and spending years snow-shoeing, skiing, cross-country skiing, and ice-skating; you would think that I would be one of those that love the cold. Wrong. I hate the cold. However, I am willing to accept that there are strange people out there who love the cold. Why else would there even be the term "winter camping"?

Like people, there are two types of dogs; those that love the cold and those that can't even tolerate putting one toe into the snow. My dog is one of the latter, she thinks that heaven is a place with lots of ice and snow and a blustery cold wind blowing her fur around her neck.

I have a vivid memory of the last time I spent a winter in a cold place. I was taking my dog, Lilac, for a walk in January in Bangor, Maine. (For those of you who aren't familiar with Bangor, Maine...think the Antarctic, only colder and windier). So, Lilac was frolicking and running in the 20 mile per hour wind at 19 degrees F and kicking up the frozen snow with her muzzle. She was so thoroughly enjoying herself that she failed to notice that her owner (me) was standing in one spot crying. I was so cold that I didn't even think that I would make it back to the car. Finally, my husband came out and carried my frozen body back to the car. Meanwhile, Lilac wanted to stay out and enjoy the lovely January weather. Needless to say-it was the last winter that I spent in Maine.

But, again, I am willing to admit that some of you love winter and the cold and snow. This article is for you!

Here are a few tips and products to help you and your dog enjoy winter camping.

Cold Weather Tips

1. First of all, you should make absolutely sure that your dog is hearty enough to withstand the cold
weather. Obviously an Italian Greyhound will not do well in the cold. Conversely, a husky or a
shepherd willtruly enjoy a cold outdoor adventure. Remember, we are responsible for our dog's
well-being. The number one rule is to make sure that your dog can cope with cold, windy, snowy
weather.

2. Make sure that you always keep your dog on a leash, in particular during a snowstorm when dogs
can lose their way and become lost. However, make sure that the leash is long enough for them to
get plenty of exercise so that they can stay warm.

3. Wipe off your dogs paws and tummy when they come in from the outdoors. They may have
picked up salt or antifreeze which you do not want them to lick. Also, check between their toes to
make sure they don't have any balls of ice or snow which can cause lameness.

4. Be particularly careful with puppies, they do not have the correct body temperature regulation
system yet. They could get cold very fast and not be able to warm themselves up. In addition, they
don't have much body mass, so they will lose their heat very quickly. Of course, the ...
