Fishing

Provided By:

Gabe Oassell of Snake Dancer Excursions in Idaho says that sturgeon come in three different sizes. “They come as shakers, keepers and peelers,” he says. “And there’s a vast difference.” Shakers shake a fisherman’s line and are less than 42 inches in length. Keepers are between 42 and 60 inches and you can keep them. Peelers peel off your line, and…

“Whoa there,” hollers Gabe, turning first to my wife then back to me, “Looks like Janie has hooked herself a peeler…”

“But can she land it?”

Judging from the way her line was spewing out and from the way she was bowing her back, she was in for a struggle. But here on the borders of Idaho, Oregon and Washington, Hells Canyon—the deepest river-carved gorge in all of North America—portends for a favorable outcome were all there. On this early day in May, the temperatures hovered around 75°F, the skies were faultlessly blue and up on the hill the chukars were clucking. It was a day to draw to, and would be even more so if Janie could land the incredible behemoth now putting some new cricks in her back.

Earlier in the week we had set up our tent at a campground in Clarkson, Idaho located near the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers. We were situated in a way so that each morning we could actually see salmon finning the waters.

Fishing in Hells Canyon was the very reason many of us belonging to the Northwest Outdoor Writer’s Association (a group with an unbridled passion for fishing) had convened for our annual conference at Clarkson. In a parody on the catching of huge fish, Ron Kerr, our organization’s director, bent forward and then back, as though deep-sea fishing. And then he blessed the area’s fishery in general, paying particular attention to its mythical species—the sturgeon.

“It’s a blast to hook one,” said Kerr, “but it’s a genuine feat if you land one, particularly in such distracting country.”

“Amen!” to that, we later learned. Indeed, Hells Canyon is distracting, essentially because it’s beautiful, historic and cataclysmically deep. In fact, its depths exceed the Grand Canyon. At its deepest, Hells Canyon is bound by He Devil Mountain, which looms to 9,393 feet and then plunges 8,000 feet from its summit to the mouth of Granite Creek. As an ongoing work of the ages, the river is wild; in fact, it is so turbulent that Oassell had to train for 365 eight-hour days to get a license for the Snake River. That’s because the river is so hard to navigate, something not all sturgeon fishermen and women appreciate.

As if to punctuate that thought, we came suddenly to an incredible set of rapids formed by a jumble of rocks sweeping away from the shore. The boulders disappeared dangerously close to the middle, which Gabe flanked with his boat. Gabe said that each year the Snake takes a few boats, but never has it taken one of his. “Jet boats in our fleet can navigate through less than a foot of water.”

After successfully negotiating the rapids, we entered an area even more austere in a...
