Back in Time at Williamsburg

Back in Time at Williamsburg

Are you ready to visit the past for an engaging, hands–on history lesson? A trip to Williamsburg, Va., transports your family back into Early American Colonial life. At the reconstructed site of Britain's most productive 18th–century New World settlement, costumed guides show and tell what daily life was like for Williamsburg's founding families. The famous town's "living museum" approach is so appealing that it attracts an impressive 4 million tourists each year.

Established more than three centuries ago, Williamsburg played a key role in the Revolutionary War and once hosted Early American movers and shakers like Patrick Henry, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. During the 1920s, J.D. Rockefeller restored the declining town to its original 1700s flavor.

In all, today's town contains 500 refurbished structures occupying a 301–acre area. Homes, taverns, shops, gardens and green spaces are all represented. Your family can interact with "townspeople" who role–play as merchants, slaves, patriots, carpenters and hard–laboring farm families.

Stroll over to the grounds of the Governor's Palace, shop for tea and spices at McKenzie's and peek inside the town "Gaol" or jailhouse. Be sure to taste the bakery's warm gingerbread cakes and visit shops where costumed wigmakers, blacksmiths, silversmiths and leather crafters display their wares. At the Magazine Armory, see militiamen in action, watch a fife–and–drum parade, and learn how to fire a musket. At the Courthouse, take a turn at play–acting as a justice or defendant. And in Williamsburg's Historic Area shops, acquaint your kids with old–fashioned handicrafts such as petticoats, straw hats and horse saddles.

A side trip to the Euro–themed Busch Gardens offers electrifying roller coasters and stand–out stage performances. If you'll be touring in the summertime, for an extra round of Williamsburg–area fun, splash into Water Country U.S.A., a vintage surf–themed park where slippery slides, a rowdy river ride and other watery amusements will keep everyone cool.

Touring Washington, D.C.

If you're looking for a capital city experience, a family–style tour of Washington, D.C., should be tops on your travel agenda.

Every president since George Washington has lived in the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., and kids of all ages like to visit the chief executives' famous home. To make reservations for an official White House tour, you must contact your senator or representative up to six months in advance of your visit.

The White House Visitor Center, at 1450 Pennsylvania Ave., is open every day of the week. At the center, you can watch a 30–minute White House video, learn inside facts about presidential families and browse through exhibits related to the extraordinary building's intricate design and celebrated furnishings.

Another Washington "best bet" for those traveling with children is the National Zoological Park. Take time to stroll through Amazonia, the...
