NY's Scenic Drive—Seaway Trail

Provided By:

NY's Scenic Drive—Seaway Trail

New York's most scenic drive is the 454-mile Seaway Trail in northern New York. It travels almost the entire length of the state following along the border with Canada. The western point of the trail is the town of Ripley, near the Pennsylvania border, and the eastern point of the trail is the town of Rooseveltown, which is northeast of Massena. The entire route, designated a New York State Scenic Byway, follows a series of routes that are all two-lane paved roads suitable for all vehicles. The route, the longest national recreation trail in the United States, is open year round and is marked by green and white Seaway Trailblazer signs. Nautical seaways as well as bicycle trails follow, and at some points intersect, sections of the route.

Beginning in the western town of Ripley, motorists can travel east where the route takes you to Lake Erie State Park and Evangola State Park along the shores of Lake Erie. Moving farther west, you then get to the city of Buffalo and then Niagara Falls. Four Mile Creek State Park, Gold Hill State Park and Lakeside Beach State Park come along the byway as you arrive upon Kuckville.

Now the scenic trail takes you to Lake Ontario's shores, where you hit Hamlin Beach State Park, Rochester, Brantling Ski Area, Fair Haven Beach State Park and the town of Texas. From Texas, you'll travel north for a stretch and come upon Selkirk Shores State Park, Southwick Beach State Park, Westcott Beach State Park and Watertown. From Watertown, you'll be able to twist and wind your way to Cape Vincent. The last stretch of the Seaway Trail takes you by a myriad of shorelined state parks: Burnham Point State Park, Thousand Islands State Park, Cedar Island State Park, Jacques Cartier State park and Coles Creek State Park. Your final destination is the town of Rooseveltown.

Many RVers enjoy staying one or two nights at any one of the coastal campgrounds, taking advantage of not only two of the Uni...
