Things to do While Camping

Meeting Yogi Bear! Whether your kids or grandkids are way-too-cool-for-you teenagers or scrappy-happy-jump-in-the-mud-puddle toddlers, the prospect of entertaining them at camp can make a normally well-adjusted parent or grandparent quake with fear. Have you ever met a bored toddler? It’s not pretty. 

That was one of my concerns when we took our first-ever camping trip (in our hybrid travel trailer). Even though we were only an hour and a half from home, this was a VERY new experience for us…and especially for my 2 year old and 9 month old sons. GULP. I voiced my concern to some fellow campers and a couple said things like, “this is camping…they’ll figure out stuff to do…you don’t have to plan for everything”. That’s nice…in theory. But in this day and age of playrooms with loads of toys, DVDs galore and a million other “distractibles” for kids, I thought that getting back to nature would be a surefire way to bore them to bits. So we did what any highly intelligent, and slightly terrified parents would do…we chose the most kid-friendly campground we could find within 1.5 hours of our home–Yogi Bear’s Jellystone in Quarryville, Pennsylvania. http://www.jellystonepa.com/

Backed in perfectly the FIRST time! Once we arrived, it was time for one of the most anxiety producing times for an RV newbie–backing in to the site. That was a VERY tense couple of minutes with other campers watching intently to see how many (dozen) times it would take us to get it right. Our campsite was almost level and my husband backed that puppy in–with expert navigational counsel from his wife–on the FIRST TRY! No, I’m not lying. Pull up, back in, done. We were set up in no time and ready to experience RVing with our boys.

The place was teeming with kids of all ages, but not in an annoying way at all. The new water-park was AMAZING, but it was a little chilly for us to use. The playground’s huge wooden train play set was immensely fun for my 2 year old as was meeting Yogi Bear and his cohorts. There was this massive (I mean massive-massive) inflatable pillow for kids to bounce on and even a super-cool pedal car track. At 7 that evening, there was a DJed dance party in the outdoor pavilion. It was a sea of hopping, bopping, spinning toddlers. What a great way for the little ones to have fun! Once the young kids went back to camp, the teenagers skulked out of the woodwork like only teenagers can.

Of course we roasted marshmallows and hot dogs on sticks over the fire, which was just a wee bit magical for my husband and me…what we always imagined RVing with our little ones would be. The boys did their fair share of pressing the awning button…repeatedly…and flipping the water heater switch on and off. But all in all it was a stress-free (yay!) long weekend for our little family. What a fantastic experience for newbies like us. Plus, we were VERY close to the Strasburg Railroad who hosts Thomas the Ta...
